WEB DuBois Notes In 1896 DuBois became the setoff Black person to encounter a Ph.D. from Harvard University in history. After teaching at Wilberforce University in Ohio and the University of Pennsylvania, he went on to establish the premiere department of sociology in the United States at Atlanta University. After graduating from Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a PhD in histroy, he became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. He was a founding member of both the Niagara Movement and the NAACP, and editor in chief of the Crisis--the NAACP literary organ. Du Bois rose to national prominence as the bring out of the Niagara Movement, a group of African American activists who desireed negotiable rights for inexorables. Du Bois and his supporters opposed the Atlanta Compromise, an agreement crafted by booker T. upper-case garner --> Instead, Du Bois insisted on just civil rights and increased political rep resentation, which he believed would be brought about by the African-American intellectual elite. He referred to this group as the talented tenth and believed that African Americans accept the chances for advanced education to develop its leadership.
